How do the yoga classes and diving packages work? 

The packages are an innovative marriage of yoga practice, relaxation, scuba diving and/or free diving. We explore how diving can become a personal meditative experience for the diver. Inexperienced divers learn scuba diving enhanced by several yoga techniques, particularly yogic breathing and breathing exercises (pranayama). 

Divers unfamiliar with yoga learn to integrate a meditative, holistic attitude into the enjoyment of diving. Our activities focus on experiencing the stillness and beauty of the reef ecosystem in a respectful, gentle way. Beginner divers are taught in an individualised program following the standards and procedures of PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors).

Dives are conducted in small groups with the emphasis on understanding nature and our impact on the reef ecosystem. Meditation and visualisation techniques aid in the improvement of dive skills for both beginners and advanced divers. Divers can obtain a PADI dive license during the course depending on their level, aptitude and desire. The Yoga classes are inspired by Ashtanga Yoga practice and are taught by Keira.

The Yoga & diving course is quite unique and one of the the first of it’s kind in Thailand. Led by Keira Coleman, a pioneer in the Yoga and Scuba diving alliance since 1999.

The week will give you an introduction to Yoga and diving with a Yogic approach to the latter. It is suitable for everybody – divers and non-divers, experienced Yoga practitioners and beginners alike.

Course details:
The course includes Yoga classes, training dives or fun diving Scuba dives, a full set of scuba equipment, tuition in both yoga and diving. Accommodation in the Reef or Homestay resorts or similar.

Optional transfers may be added.

Yoga and Diving Fusion Program
Entering a meditative state of mind and being in the present moment. The fusion of yoga and diving can help you understand what meditation is and how you will be able to apply it in your daily life. Through diving, one can experience a moving meditative state, a sense of peace and connectedness with nature. As you float silently and weightless in the ocean, hearing only the sound of your breathing, you will slowly begin to realize the feeling of being fully in the present in the moment as you experience a new sensation of being utterly engrossed and submerged in a completely different environment and dimension. The sensation of hovering in mid-water is immensely liberating. It is like experiencing near-zero gravity in space. This simply diving exercise induces a natural tendency to automatically enter a meditative state which means diving helps us understand meditation better.

Meditation is one of the 8 limbs of the Ashtanga yoga practice.

Dynamic yoga style based on Ashtanga & Vinyasa Flow
The yoga classes are vibrant and include sun salutations, as well as a dynamic flowing sequence of asanas (postures) bringing awareness into mindfulness and energy flow, followed by relaxation and a short meditation. The classes are suitable for all levels and variations given accordingly. Yoga groups are small less than 10 people which allows for personal attention and adjustment.

Keirita’s yoga studio
The daily morning and evening yoga sessions will take place inside the Keirita’s yoga studio located just next door the lovely Homestay Bungalows. This location is right in Koh Lipe’s town center, just off the walking street providing a very central and easily accessible location for anyone staying on the 3 major beaches of Lipe such as Pattaya, Sunrise and Sunset.

Pranayama (breathing techniques)
Yoga is defined as a union between the soul and the body. As such, the breath is seen as the fundamental link between our physical and mental aspects. Yogic breathing exercises or pranayama teaches one how to re-energize the body and control the mind by regulating the flow of Prana (life force). We will practice Ujjayi Breathing (victorious breath), Kapalabhati (cleansing breath), and Analoma Viloma (alternate nostril breathing).

Concentration/Meditation
Meditation, like buoyancy in diving can be explained but cannot be taught as such. It is something which comes naturally to each person  in their own time when they are ready. Everyone is different, some grasp is straight away for others it takes longer, there are no hard and fast rules but if you follow the right steps and are patient, you will get there in time. We will practice a short relaxation session of 8-10 minutes after each yoga session.

Keira Coleman
Keira is the founder of Keiritas Yoga – the one and only yoga alternative in Lipe offering yoga retreats and classes combined with scuba diving throughout the year since 2009. She is a registered yoga teacher with the worldwide Yoga Alliance. She teaches Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, Yoga, which brings awareness into mindfulness and energy flow. Keira has been practicing yoga for over 16 years. She has completed two teacher trainings, the first one in the Yoga institute in Santa Cruz in Mumbai, India under Yogandraji. The second at It’s Yoga San Francisco with Larry Schultz. She holds a vision to introduce the practice of yoga to divers & diving to the yogis alike. She is passionate about life, yoga, the ocean, scuba diving, free diving and traveling.
